The I Can Do It! Workshop and Conference took over the Tampa Convention Center in November. The conference featured a wide variety of motivational speakers, workshops and seminars with one goal in mind – help people on their way to a better mind, body and soul.
So we decided to share some of the self-help knowledge coming to Tampa with our readers. We have asked three speakers of the upcoming event to answer some questions that pertain to the mind, body and beauty of the twentysomethings living in Tampa.
First up in our series we have make-up artist, self-image specialist and Tampa native Michelle Phillips answering some questions about beauty, skin care and body image.
I don’t have a lot of money to spend on high-end make-up. What brands are just as good as the brands behind the counter but don’t come with the hefty price tag?
Well, L’oreal is the same company as Lancome cosmetics so the products are not the exact formulations but comparable. When you shop at a department store you are paying for the nice packaging and the person helping you behind the counter.
I’m always at the beach and the pool. I don’t want to look glammed up for my outdoor activity, but I do want my cover up and mascara to stay on. Any suggestions?
Yes, Revisions Intellishade SPF 45 is a moisturizer with an SPF protection and a sheer mineral tint that acts as a light foundation to help even out your skin tone and protect you from the sun. Revlon always has good mascaras and most formulas come in waterproof depending on the color and the need you have such as lengthening, thickening, etc.
And since I’m in the sun a lot, what do you recommend for protecting my skin from the sun?
The best sun protection for the face is Obagi SPF 35, it has a high level of zinc to protect from the damaging rays of the sun and it won’t break out your skin. For the body I like Waterbabies. BUT, be sure to reapply often, even hourly. Don’t think because you apply once you are protected all day even if you stay out of the water.
What if I forget sun block and end up getting burned. Any tips for returning the moisture back to my fried face?
You definitely want to use aloe vera immediately after a burn. Also use cool compresses of wash cloths soaked in milk. The lactic acid helps soothe and heal the skin.
Speaking of the beach, I haven’t been feeling too fantastic about my beach body. What can I do to feel better about my body while living in a world full of skinny bikinis?
Focus on what you do love about your body rather than what you don’t. They call it self-confidence and self-esteem for a reason, you are the source of your true beauty and no one else. When you focus on what is wrong with your body everyone else will notice too.
Any tricks for looking better in my bikini?
The key to looking good in a bikini is wearing one that fits properly. Wearing any garment that is too tight or too big accentuates features you would probably rather minimize.
Have any additional advice on how to live a life of healthy mind, body and soul in the Tampa Bay area?
The important things to focus in order to live a healthy and happy life are your own beautiful qualities rather than those around you. It is especially hard for today’s twentysomethings because of the so-called “reality” they see in the media. The extravagant lifestyles and unobtainable looks are not even real to the people supposedly living them. I know firsthand as a celebrity makeup artist that if we all had personal trainers, chefs, makeup artists, perfect lighting, and someone to airbrush our images at the end, we would all look that way. Be confident with who you are and live according to your values, that is your beauty!
Michelle Phillips is a Tampa Bay native and former celebrity makeup artist for the likes of Katie Couric, Colbie Cailat and Doris Roberts. She continued on to become a well-known television personality, making appearances on local and national TV shows such as “The Daily Buzz”, HSN, TLC, and HGTV.Phillips can discuss true beauty, media messages and their influence on women’s self-image and how women can cultivate their beauty to revolutionize the way they see themselves.
